In the competitive game between Yahoo and Google there has been a change in status. For the first time ever since May 2011, Yahoo's network of websites has had more unique monthly visitors than Google's, according to recent data for July 2013 from comScore. The industry leader in internet audience measurement announced that Yahoo sites had 196.5 million unique U.S. visitors in July – more than the 192.2 million for Google. Microsoft sites came in third with 179.5 million visitors and Facebook was fourth with 142.2 million visitors.
Many in internet-related industries are wondering if this changes in status is due to the appointment of Marissa Mayer as the latest Yahoo!, CEO. The Washington Post reported that Mayer, who is a Google alum, has been working hard to modernize Yahoo's reputation in the industry. When Mayer was first appointed to the position of CEO, Yahoo was lagging behind Google in unique page views by more than 5 million in July 2012. Just one year later Mayer has been able to turn the figurative bus around and begins to really show that Yahoo's days as a tech giant and force in the industry may not be over.
For search and social experts looking to boost standings with an IT employment agency, it's important to show a wide knowledge of how various networks are using search algorithms. Google is not the only game in town and the increasing interest in both Mayer and Yahoo might just yet throw the IT sector on its ear. However, streamers shouldn't be put up in the Yahoo offices just yet. The study reported that Yahoo is still only third in place for mobile traffic and as mobile increasingly makes up a large part of internet usage it will be important to improve.
