As a recruiter, I’ve found that there are particular methods which effectively pave your way not only forward, but upward in your career.
Find a Mentor
First, it would be beneficial for you to scope out and develop a mentoring relationship with someone at a higher-level within the company. Not only would this give you an opportunity to prove your skills to this individual, it increases your chances of getting your name (and your abilities) brought up to other higher-level employees. Come time for promotion, your name may come to the forefront of multiple decision-makers.
Keep a Record
Keep track of all of the particular projects you have worked on, especially those that have really benefitted to the company. During evaluation meetings with your superior, mentioning these achievements show that you are dedicated to mission and goal of the company. Also, if you ever choose to change companies, it is easier to update your resume when you have a written record of your accomplishments.
Ask for More
Increase your chances for a promotion by asking for more responsibility, especially if you can flexibly work both independently and in groups. Showing that you can take on more work and work effectively in any type of environment makes you a good candidate for the company to invest in.
Grow from Critique
Lastly, be a reflective learner. Don’t shy away from personally reflecting on your own opportunities for improvement. This allows you to independently develop new and innovative ways of overcoming any personal obstacles. In any peer or management review, use any critique to constantly improve your professional skillset and performance. This will make you an attractive employee for promotion.
