In our business, so much hinges on good timing when trying to match a candidate to an available position. In general, all of the components that go into good timing are variables that we have little to no control over. However, you can control your activity level and increase your level of yourself involved. I think that people can fall into saying that someone “got lucky” when the sale or placement looks easy. On the contrary, chances are it appeared that way because the person was well positioned by being active and actively made efforts to be involved in the process.
As we all know, it only takes one resume to break through. I have rarely seen a position be filled without presenting a resume or an order being won by not picking up the phone. People that wait for opportunities or candidates to find them will spend more time not liking their job than those that go out of their way to generate activity and plant seeds (even when business is good). Not to mention, when you are working through the peaks and valley’s, inherent to our industry, the valleys will not seem as steep or hard to climb out of if you make it a priority to be more involved!
