For this blog I’ve decided to mix it up a bit. Instead of writing about my knowledge of staffing and recruitment, I want to share something truly inspiring. My mother sent me an email with a link in it yesterday and, to be perfectly honest, my first instinct was to delete it. I figured it was just another chain letter totem pole thing wishing me good luck if I spam 17 of my closest friends within 48 hours.
Instead it was an 8-minute clip of an episode of X Factor in Australia that I’ve watched 3 times. (And I’ll probably share with 17 of my closest friends). Warning: It’s moving, so grab a tissue!
In short, it’s about an X-Factor contestant named Emanuel who doesn’t know what year he was born, only that it happened in a war zone in Iraq. Emanuel and his brother were found in a shoe box by nuns and brought to a shelter. The two of them were adopted by an amazing Australian woman, now called “mum”.
Emanuel’s mother is “his hero and his inspiration” and after watching this video, no doubt Emanuel is mine. In an added bonus, he sang my favorite John Lennon song, “Imagine”.
So, here are a couple of thoughts I wanted to share after watching the clip. And yes, it includes hokey “follow your dreams” clichés.
What’s really important to you?
Do we ever stop moving, stop responding to emails, stop stressing about the minutia and think about what really matters? I don’t. But I’m going to today, that’s for sure. Focus on what matters, delete what doesn’t.
“I definitely want to be the best”
Emanuel says this in the first couple minutes in the video. If a man born with literally nothing, sans identity, can move that many people, I’m pretty sure all of us can be the best at what we know every day (don’t say I didn’t warn you earlier about the hokey clichés).
Surround yourself with positive people who support you.
This is my favorite one. I’m fortunate enough to have colleagues and leaders in my organization that are on my side, challenging me and praising me. Do you? If not, let’s talk! At Profiles, we do more than edit your resume or share job opportunities: we can sit down and discuss your long-term goals and vision for your career, then provide advice to guide you toward success.
IMAGINE.
This is my favorite line in the song: “Imagine all the people living for today”. I can’t begin to fathom what life would be like if everyone focused on today, this moment in time. How can we be great now? Not what happened yesterday; we have the most control over today. Today I am going to imagine myself helping someone find their “dream job” and do everything I can to make that a reality.
I know this was a bit cheesy, especially for me – the “sarcastic one” of the Profiles team. But it helped motivate me, inspire me and think about what’s really important. If one person reads this and is moved and feels the same way, then in my mind I wrote a successful blog.
