When I speak to my candidates looking for work, one of their biggest fears is negotiating a salary. However, you can overcome this fear by approaching the conversation in one of the following positive ways.
Remember, if the salary offer is open to negotiation, you must make sure to convey that you are truly interested in the job.
Do Your Research
Always be sure to do your research on the job market, to find out what the average cost of living is for the area, and what professionals in your field are earning.
See the Big Picture
Don’t overlook other forms of compensation in making your comparisons. Consider: benefits, a signing bonus or moving allowance, and frequency and basis of salary increases over time.
Evaluate Yourself
Honestly assess your own background and qualifications. If you are asking for an above-average salary, you must be above-average in your credentials. Support your request by explaining the success in your past experiences.
Adjust Your Expectations
Be prepared for the possibility that the employer still may not change the salary offer. However, if you start out the conversation tactfully, you can still gracefully accept the original offer, if you choose.
