2020 Tax Deadline Extension Frequently Asked Questions
Tax season already comes with its own layers of stress. In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the United States Government continues to put acts and relief efforts in place to help the American people as we navigate this time of uncertainty. Here, we address questions around the 2020 tax deadline extension.
(A “way to go!” to you if you’ve already filed your taxes).
When are federal income tax filings and payments due?
As of March 21, 2020, the IRS has extended the deadline for 2019 tax filing and payment to July 15, 2020, rescheduled from the original April 15, 2020 date.
When are state income tax filings and payments due?
Most states have extended their deadlines and in accordance with the federal deadline. As a gut check, check out this resource that leads to individual state tax agencies to see exactly when your individual state income tax returns are due.
Does this mean I should wait to do my taxes?
With the extension, the IRS, as well as other tax resources, strongly encourage taxpayers to still file their taxes at the federal and state level in a timely manner if you are able. As always, the sooner you submit your taxes, the sooner you will receive your tax refund.
How does this extension affect tax refunds?
Tax refunds are not affected by the extension or COVID-19. Tax returns will still be processed and sent out normally. Despite the coronavirus outbreak, the IRS is committed to sticking to its tax refund schedule. Taxslayer.com productively maps out an estimated schedule here. Tax refund processing is dependent on three things:
- When you file your 2019 tax return.
- How you file your 2019 tax return (electronically or via mail).
- Mode of tax refund delivery (check or direct deposit).
Am I able to request an extension on my taxes with this new deadline?
Despite this universal extension to July 15, 2020, you can still file for an extension to October 15, 2020 to submit your federal and state income tax return. According to the IRS, all taxpayers are eligible to submit a request for an extension.
