Are companies hiring during COVID-19?
News of massive corporate layoffs and furloughs are flooding outlets. With that, it is no surprise that the unemployment rate increased exponentially between February and March. It only makes sense to question whether now is the time to job search. So, are companies hiring? In short: yes – companies are still hiring during COVID-19. However, it depends on the industry and the job function.
Are creative and marketing jobs still available?
Consumer behaviors have drastically changed in a very short time. Online activity has increased since the beginning of March, most notably through online shopping and streaming/TV activity. It’s been reported that 10 percent more consumers are creating and uploading their own video content. This swift shift has marketing pros in senior-level positions to re-evaluating budgets and investing in digital. PPC is being touted as the best way to utilize ad spend during this time, with email marketing at a close second.
With that said and considering COVID-19, marketing jobs continue to come in and encompass the Profiles’ job board. Marketing jobs account for 42 percent of all current, open opportunities with copywriting and design jobs trailing at second and third respectively reports Profiles Marketing Manager, Christy DeAngelo. “Without question, marketing jobs are the positions that withstood the shift once COVID-19 took over,” Christy explains. “The Profiles job board is a clear reflection of where marketing dollars are going during this time. With everyone home, investment in digital is evident. There is no telling what the future holds, but this is where the creative and marketing staffing niche stands right now.” At this time, the Marketing, Creative, and IT staffing industry has only been moderately negatively impacted by COVID-19.
These findings align with data from recent Profiles COVID-19 Job Market Report that anonymously surveyed candidates and hiring managers regarding the creative and marketing job market and economic climate. Employed candidate respondents outweighed the unemployed, with those employed working in digital marketing, communications, and copywriting.
What employment type are companies utilizing?
Contract employment is down two percent year over year with further impact on the horizon. While some are still opting for contract staffing solutions, companies are approaching hiring with more permanent hiring solutions – shifting to direct hire staffing. As for decreasing headcount, hiring manager respondents to the Profiles COVID-19 Job Market Report shared contractors would be the first to go should the department need to downsize.
